Map Maker - A School for Deaf & Autistic Learners
Map Maker is a school designed to support Deaf and Hard of Hearing students on the autism spectrum, giving them the foundational skills needed to thrive at Oklahoma School for the Deaf or in a public school setting. We focus on elementary-aged learners, addressing the critical gaps caused by language deprivation and providing the tools needed for behavior shaping, communication, and self-regulation. For families looking for support or a school for Deaf Plus students in Oklahoma, we encourage you to reach out to us.
Our approach is rooted in the Conscious Discipline model, which not only builds social-emotional skills but also offers a fully visual de-escalation system. This helps students replace self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) and other challenges with effective, signed communication and self-regulation strategies. For literacy, we use the Edmark Reading Program, an evidence-based approach proven to support Deaf/Hard of Hearing and autistic learners. Through structured repetition, we will reinforce both reading skills and essential language acquisition, ensuring every student has the ability to express themselves and succeed in their next educational steps.
Because Deaf Plus students are spread across the state, we are looking at establishing alternate classrooms in different regions to reach more students where they are. By splitting coverage, we can ensure that as many children as possible have access to the education and support they need to thrive.
